Beautiful – The Carole King Musical

5th April 2018

Categories: News

I thought I knew the music of Carole King , after all she is the most successful female singer-songwriter of the twentieth century and I am a sucker for piano with a female vocal. That said, it turns out I have not even scratched the surface of the genius that is Carole King.

Whilst I was familiar with her later work, that she performed herself: ‘I Feel the Earth Move’ and ‘It’s too Late’ both delivered brilliantly by Bronte Barbe in the show in her role as the lead, there were other tracks that I knew well but had no idea that she was responsible for. Starting with ‘It might as Well Rain Until September’ which she wrote aged 16, as well as her hits with her first husband Gerry Goffin which include: ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘Up on the Roof’, ‘The Locomotion’ and the truly outstanding ‘You Make me Feel Like a Natural Woman’ to name just a few.

Bronte captures the shy awkwardness of Carole effortlessly and draws you in to the magic that goes in to writing a song and the struggle of being a woman in a man’s world. Throughout the show Carole grows in confidence and turns her struggles in to strengths and uses the experiences to write some of the most powerful and memorable songs of the last century.

The show was packed with songs that you recognise and they tell the real life story of the very Beautiful Carole King.

I think I have found myself a new hero!
