12th November 2014

Categories: News

The Visit Somerset team is working closely with First Great Western to promote the Somerset event calendar, linking key dates in Somerset’s tourism diary and train travel.

This has resulted in seeing a special First Great Western service for the Dunster by Candlelight event on December 6.
The annual festive extravaganza transforms the village’s streets which are lit by candlelight with the centre turned into a traditional market accompanied by Christmas themed entertainment including carol singers, Morris dancers, hand bell ringers, large fairground organ and the Parish Church choir.
First Great Western is offering a direct return service from Bristol Temple Meads via Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater and Taunton to Dunster.
Dan Okey, Regional Development Manager said: "First Great Western is committed to supporting the communities it serves. What better way to do this than by providing additional trains to help our customers travel too key events in the region?"
John Turner, Visit Somerset’s chief executive, said;  "We have been working with First Great Western for several years with the intention of developing a long term and sustainable strategy that will encourage many more tourists to get on the train and visit Somerset.
“This initiative marks what i see as the beginning potentially of that process and I am delighted that travel to 'Dunster by Candle light' is our inaugural event
“Our intention next year is to start work with First Great Western on other Somerset projects that First Great Western customers can potentially buy into, linking in with some key dates in the Somerset tourism diary, this will of course be a work in progress.
“Working with First Great Western is a huge privilege and I hope it goes to prove that not only is the Visit Somerset team  working hard to create incredible value for our customers, but we are also working with some of the best brands in the business, in realising our dream of creating a county of opportunity for all our members and customers alike. I would just like to thank First Great Western for their incredible support and dedication to Somerset's cause, it’s an absolute pleasure working with them."
Ticket prices for Standard Class return travel will be £29.50 for an adult and £14.75 for a child (aged 5 to 15 years), with Family Tickets also available for £75.50 (2 adults and 2 children) First Class travel options are also available.
