Nature needs you - nine opportunities to make a real difference - featuring the Great British Beach Clean

20 September marks the start of the week long Great British Beach Clean citizen science event organised by environmental charity the Marine Conservation Society.  Each year hundreds of beach cleans take place all over the UK including several on our coast.

A mass litter pick will take place in Watchet on 28 September run in conjunction with Plastic Free Watchet and Plastic Free Communities in West Somerset.  Andy Levett, organiser, tells us “Plastic pollution along the West Somerset coast is an increasing concern.  It has a huge impact on marine life and coastal birds and detracts from the beauty of our unique coastline.  The Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean events provide local communities and visitors to the area an opportunity to get out and enjoy our wonderful beaches while making a positive difference to the environment.”

The event is just one of nine opportunities for nature loving volunteers featured in the latest edition of the "Feel Great" series.  The itinerary is the sixth, funded by Somerset Council and the Hinkley Point Tourism Action Partnership, featuring more than 50 ways to enrich your life, this one focusing on giving back and connecting with the natural world.  Get involved with local communities, contribute to environmental conservation, boost your physical and mental health, learn new skills and make new friends.

Whether you are visiting for a few days or live locally this new guide suggests many different ways to get involved; monitoring marine life, collecting litter, fundraising, each effort supports the environment and helps to look after the unique Somerset and Exmoor coastline.
