Arrive Oakhouse Axbridge

Situated in the picturesque Somerset countryside, only a short drive from Wells and Cheddar, The Westbury Inn is truly charming. With a sociable bar area, beer garden and superb restaurant serving extremely reasonably priced food, this inn is a great little find.

On arrival, my companion and I were met with the sound of convivial chatter coming from the locals in the bar. Our friendly waitress showed us to our table in the restaurant, where we were promptly presented with our wine - a couple of glasses of the house red, a quality cabernet sauvignon which was reasonably priced. We began with the English wild asparagus salad with a Parmesan crisp and the confit duck and redcurrant jelly tortellini, both of which were exceptional and beautifully presented. For my main course I ordered the 8oz rib-eye steak served with chunky chips, salad and a peppercorn sauce - in true testament to the skill of the chef, the steak was tender and full of flavour. My companion was equally delighted with her generous dish of monkfish with sweet leeks, bacon and a Parma ham crisp.

Finally, our impeccable puddings of rhubarb and vanilla trifle and Besley's Cheddar Valley strawberry trio were simply delicious - we agreed it's worth visiting The Westbury Inn for its desserts alone.
