Somerset Travel Information
In a county as big and beautiful as Somerset, it could be said the journey is as important a part of the experience as the destination. We are extremely well connected with airports at Bristol and Exeter, the M5 motorway, a mainline to London and the A303 that brings you in via Stonehenge. If you make the journey by train or bus, you have the added luxury of being able to sit back and enjoy the views!
Omio
Omio is a travel platform that allows customers to find and book trains, buses and flights across Europe. Partnering with over 800 European transport operators, Omio is changing the travel planning experience, providing travellers with more choice, transparent pricing and easier booking.
Omio lets travellers search for any location, including cities, towns and villages, showing the best possible transport combinations while eliminating the need to visit multiple websites to plan an entire trip to Somerset from abroad or the UK.
Travel By Train
Somerset has one of Britain’s greatest achievers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to thank for the rail link between London and Somerset which opened up the West Country’s seaside resorts to visitors. Currently, GWR is making the biggest investment since Brunel’s time in its network, fleet and stations.
A real treat for the traveller is to dine in style on a Pullman Carriage – described as one of Britain’s best kept secrets - choosing from a menu of West County ingredients and enjoying silver service.
As well as travelling across the county by rail you can travel back in time as Somerset boasts several heritage railways including the longest in England – the West Somerset Railway. This 20-mile line takes you from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead on the edge of Exmoor through charming village stations with magical views of the Quantock Hills, the coast and even a castle. The East Somerset Railway runs through the Mendip Hills and the Somerset and Dorset Railway is based at Midsomer Norton.
Travel By Coach
Somerset is a popular destination for coaches - they have been coming west since the first services began in the 1920s between London and Bristol. Today there are a number of companies bringing visitors into the county daily, as well as offering excursions to our many attractions and events.
Coach travel too has come a long way since the days of horse drawn stage coaches, even though some of the wonderful coaching inns remain. Now we can sweep through the countryside in air-conditioned comfort with washrooms and refreshments onboard.
A warm Somerset welcome awaits passengers and their drivers and we are delighted when one of our seaside resorts, Burnham-On-Sea, became the first destination in the South West to achieve ‘Coach Friendly Status’ from the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK.
Established in 1920, Berry's Coaches is a family-run business operating from the County Town of Taunton in the heart of the scenic West Country. We offer a range of services including five daily Super-Fast services linking London and the West Country.
Using Public Transport
Once you arrive, you can access Information Centres and websites for helpful hints on finding your way around. One of Britain’s largest bus operators, First Bus, covers the county taking more than 54m passengers on its Bristol, Bath and The West Service. It also operates Park & Ride services in the county town, Taunton. Other local bus services and train routes will help guide you around the county.
