Description

Somerset’s county town lies along the River Tone and proudly displays its history in the Museum of Somerset, which is set in the reconstructed remains of a Norman castle.

Exhibits cover Somerset’s early history, its traditions, artistic inspiration, military might and the Monmouth Rebellion. Taunton itself was once home to a priory and the town profited hugely from the wool trade in Medieval times. The magnificent, 48m-high tower of St Mary Magdalene church, which dominates Hammet Street, is testament to its success. Quirky Vivary Park is a great place for a picnic. Once the site of a medieval fish farm belonging to the old priory, the park has a fountain dedicated to Queen Victoria and views of the hulking red keep of Jellalabad military barracks. Alternatively, the riverside French Weir Park has a cafe and is a great place to hire paddleboards for a scoot downriver.
