Berrys Coaches Somerset Itinerary

North Petherton

Description

Once a large village but now a town, North Petherton has a 15th-century church, St Mary’s, with a handsome Perpendicular-style tower.

North Petherton
The 9th-century Alfred Jewel - now in Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum - was found in the town and Athelney, King Alfred’s hideout on the Levels, is just over ten minutes away, as is Burrow Mump, which was once fortified by the king. North Petherton sits on the edge of the Quantock Hills where the National Trust’s Fyne Court, a country house and nature reserve, is a 15-minute drive away. Head south of town for 15 minutes to visit Hestercombe House, which has 50 acres of gardens with designs by Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edward Lutyens.
