Activity weekend in North Somerset

Cycling

Description

The area around Weston-super-Mare offers cyclists of all abilities some fantastic opportunities. There’s the challenging climbs of the Mendip Hills but also large areas of flat riding along the levels which mean you don’t need to have the latest carbon fibre bike and all the flashy lycra gear to get out there and enjoy the countryside.

Cycling

If you don’t have a bike or haven’t brought it with you on holiday, you can hire a bike, a tandem or even a side-by-side tandem, in Weston from http://www.in2gear.biz/

Here below are a few rides for you to enjoy, or alternatively you can spread out your Ordnance Survey map or tap into Google Maps to create a ride of your own.

The Brean Down Way

This ride starts slap bang in the middle of Weston and takes you right out to one of Somerset’s finest viewpoints, through nature reserves and under the shadow of the Uphill cliffs. It then climaxes with a spectacular ride along the rocky headland that is Brean Down to reach Palmerston Fort at the very tip of the peninsula.

The eight-mile outward ride is varied in both landscape and terrain, starting out as a flat promenade heading south from Weston’s Grand Pier. It then takes you to the pretty village of Uphill, with its cliff-top church, and out through the Walborough and Bleadon nature reserves before arriving at Brean Down. There you can follow the Old Military Road along to the old fort taking in awesome views past the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm and across to Wales or looking back to Weston. You can also stop off for some refreshments and reward yourself at one of the cafes along the route.
