Dovecote Building, 26 High Street, BA10 0AA, Bruton

Description

Bruton Museum is nestled on the High Street, housed in the Dovecote Building just behind the Community Office. Founded in
1989, it tells the story of Bruton’s colourful history and is an
essential destination whether you are a visitor to Bruton or live in
the town.

Bruton Museum
We tell the story of Bruton’s past and present through the display of objects, from prehistoric to modern times.

Amongst our vast range of artefacts, the exquisite wares of Bruton silversmith Gabriel Felling, the unique sculptures of WWII German refugee Ernst Blensdorf, and the writing desk commissioned by John
Steinbeck when he lived here in 1959, are some of the highlights. Set in the heart of a rich agricultural landscape, Bruton emerged as a market town and important ecclesiastical centre, its priory
evolving into the great abbey that once stood next to the beautiful church of St Mary.

For centuries it was an important and prosperous mill town specialising in the production of woollen
cloth and, later, silk. Among its many fascinating historic buildings are the splendid seventeenth-century almshouses that commemorate the town’s great benefactor, Sir Hugh Sexey.

The internationally-renowned gallery and exhibition space Hauser and Wirth at Durslade Farm is within walking distance. The High Street now offers an array of independent shops and places to eat with plenty to do.

Bruton is bursting with creative talent and to represent this the museum has created an ever-changing display “Casespace” to show contemporary art and collections. Check in and see “What’s
on”.

The Museum will be launching the first Bruton Festival of History and Heritage in the near future with a programme of exciting events at various locations. Plans are also in place for Museum members to participate in walks and visits during the Summer. We also run an annual programme of talks at the Museum in the
Autumn.
