Description
Explore our magnificent collection based on the Clark family and their 200-year-old global shoemaking business. With over 100,000 objects, we are open to the public for research, enquiries, tours, and events. We are building a museum that will inspire the world with the family and community stories behind Clarks shoes, opening by 2025.
Alfred Gillett Trust
With objects and archives spanning six generations of a family firm, we tell the story of the development of Street as a company village, 200 years of shoemaking heritage, the Clark family and their economic, social and political concerns based around their Quaker beliefs, and local history, including our popular collection of fossilised marine reptiles – the ichthyosaurs that swam in these waters under our feet 200 million years ago, found right here in Street.
Community and family are rooted at the heart of Clarks history. Iconic material from marketing design, commissioned from the best artists and photographers of the day, can be found alongside examples of shoes from across the globe, collected to energise and inform creative design. Day-to-day records of running a company over two hundred years sit alongside stories of innovation and experimentation with fascinating stories of factory working life.
With aspirations to build a museum and to expand the archive we are poised and ready to convert the site to a fully open public offer in time for the 200-year anniversary of the founding of the company in 2025 including a number of galleries, newly landscaped grounds, a café and a shop, welcoming visitors from near and afar.
We operate a research and enquiry service by appointment, conduct tours and talks for interested groups, and have an annual programme of events such as outdoor theatre and cinema in the grounds of the Grange.
