Our organic farm and mill
Sharpham Park is a 300 acre estate in the heart of the Somerset Levels near Glastonbury. It’s the home of Mulberry founder Roger Saul who moved from the world of fashion to food in 2004 when he launched the Sharpham Park brand from his organic farm.
At Sharpham Park we grow organic spelt and stone grind it in the traditional way to preserve the delicious, nutty taste of the ancient grain. Today, we turned the milled spelt into flour, cereals and grains however history records show spelt has been grown for approximately 4,000 years in the area since the Bronze and Iron ages.
The farm is also sustainably managed – the spelt fields have 4 metre margins and the hedgerows are cut every other year meaning wildlife such as wild deer, hare, bees and dormice are allowed to shelter and forage for food all year round.
The ancient grain
Spelt is an ancient grain which as has gained popularity in recent times because it’s an excellent source of dietary fibre and contains protein as well as some vitamins and minerals. It’s both easy to digest and leaves you feeling fuller for longer as well as being a good source of slow release energy; so much so the Roman Army called it their “marching grain”.
