The Strawberry Line - Winscombe to Axbridge Hill

Find the perfect section for your day out.

For a long, continuous route that takes in the North Somerset Levels and the Mendip Hills AONB, head for the 10-mile Yatton-Cheddar stretch of the Strawberry Line. The 2-mile section from Wells to Dulcote offers ancient woodland and spectacular hillside views of Wells Cathedral. Fledgling sections at Westbury-sub-Mendip and Shepton Mallet tantalise the active traveller with a vision of a kinder, greener future. All routes are wheelchair-friendly, with a hard all-weather surface and shallow gradients. The single exception to this is a fairly steep lane (Racurium Cottage) at Axbridge.

On leaving Winscombe towards the Mendips, cutting and embankment alternate. Hills to both sides turn into a deep wooded cutting before the line passes under Shute Shelve Hill through an original 165-metre, lit railway tunnel. Inside, you can clearly see the change in geology from soft brick-faced soft marl to hard limestone. The tunnel is home to several species of bat and rare cave spiders. After crossing the busy A38 via a purpose-built traffic island, you can enjoy spectacular views across the Cheddar Valley to Brent Knoll, the coast and even the Quantock Hills.
