Weekend break for couples in Minehead

Weekend break for couples in Minehead

DAY 1

Freedom, space, choice, huddling – a few of the many words associated with couples seeking a weekend away from it all.

And there is no better place than Minehead and West Somerset to develop new experiences and memories.

Minehead is the start of the South West Coast Path, illustrated by a novel sculpture near the harbour. You could arrive in style by walking eastwards into the town from Porlock Weir or Lynmouth. Check the South West Coast Path here - www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk

It is a special atmospheric experience arriving at Minehead Harbour, overlooked by the Old Ship Aground. Here is the chance to stay and dine in an old inn, full of tales and history https://www.visitsomerset.co.uk/places-to-stay/hotels/the-old-ship-aground

The harbour is a peaceful place to rest and observe and also gives the chance to look around the RNLI Minehead Lifeboat Station.

DAY 2

An early morning walk around Blenheim Gardens (https://www.visitsomerset.co.uk/discover-somerset/towns-villages/west-somerset/minehead/things-to-do/blenheim-gardens)  is a calming way to start the day and experience the genteel nature of Minehead. Situated adjacent to the tree-lined avenue, Minehead’s impressive selection of independent shops offer the chance to buy local produce and crafts. On Friday mornings visitors can enjoy the weekly Farmers’ Market at the centre of town. A trip over to the medieval village of Dunster is an interesting contrast. Dunster Castle (https://www.visitsomerset.co.uk/things-to-do/attractions/history-and-heritage/national-trust-dunster-castle)  overlooks the village, almost resembling an illustration from a fable. A fortified home for 600 years, it breathes Somerset history, surrounded by beautiful gardens and also a working watermill.

Dunster has a choice of restaurants and tea shops, as well as independent gift shops that overlook the historic Yarn Market.

The afternoon gives an opportunity to experience the remarkable West Somerset Railway, a 22 mile unique heritage line that is beautifully preserved and gives a truly authentic experience of travelling by Steam. It is the longest heritage railway in the country.

A day rover ticket allows you to meander along the charming series of stations, hopping on and off at your leisure, taking all the family back to the age of steam. You can hop on at Dunster station, a short walk over the road from the village, or return to Minehead and commence there.
