Somerset’s independent, family-run attraction, Wookey Hole, recently hosted an exclusive sale to raise vital funds for three charities close to the heart of the attraction’s late owner and world’s greatest showman, Gerry Cottle.
A unique opportunity to purchase memorabilia, historical artefacts and one-of-a-kind pieces of circus history, the sale raised £10,000 for Cancer Research UK, Prostate Cancer UK and Parkinson's UK in loving memory of the circus legend and former owner.
Gerry was a true showman and global sensation. He bought Wookey Hole in 2003 after retiring from the global circus circuit and ran the attraction until he died in 2021. Gerry left Wookey Hole to his family “in trust”, who are working hard to preserve his legacy and bring the attraction into the 21st century, with new features, events and developments coming soon.
The sale took place over a weekend in January, marking the second anniversary of Gerry’s death. During this time, the Cottle family and close friends celebrated Gerry’s extraordinary life with an intimate memorial service, attended by more than 200 people.
Ellen Ramsay, granddaughter of Gerry Cottle and Marketing Executive for Wookey Hole, comments, “It’s been a very emotional start to the year for us, but we have been overwhelmed with love and kindness from everyone. We want the items to be a legacy to my grandad and hope that a new lease of life is given to his adored possessions, whilst raising money for great causes.

You have made a huge difference and all money raised will be divided equally between Cancer Research UK, Prostate Cancer UK and Parkinson's UK, charities very close to our hearts. We are living through challenging times and to be able to come together, raise money and support those in need has been a real honour.”
