Shepton Mallet Prison to remain open in the New Year

21 Dec 2023

The building and visitor attraction are extremely important to the local community, and we are sure that this will come as very welcome news to residents in and around Shepton Mallet. We are also looking forward to further discussions in the new year with the owners, City & Country Group, regarding the longer-term future of the site.

Joel Campbell CEO Cove Group said, “We are optimistic about our forthcoming discussions with City & Country and relieved on behalf of our hard-working staff who now know that their jobs are secure into the new year. We would like to thank the local community for their support in recent weeks and hope that this continues as we remain open for business.”

John Turner Visit Somerset CEO said; "We are delighted with this news, for the staff who work so hard at the Prison and the security of their jobs, whilst ensuring that this iconic piece of Somerset history is secured for many more years, so that visitors can learn about such things such as the last UK execution, where the Magna Carta was stored during the Second World War, to the Kray Twins. It is a staggering monument to UK and Somerset history. We are thrilled! "
