Some 156 varieties of apple have a connection with Somerset, so it is easy to understand why it is famous for its cider. You can visit several farms and see how it is still made using the traditional method. The orchards are not just for cider since the apples can be used for juices, vinegars, liqueurs and preserves. A fine accompaniment for cider is cheese which is fortunate because the County is also renowned for its dairy produce, being the home of Cheddar Cheese. Among our other claims to fame are the wonderful Cheddar strawberries we grow and willow which we still produce commercially to make baskets, furniture, fences and other goods.
