Description

Nestled at the foot of the Quantock Hills, Bishops Lydeard is a vibrant village with an wonderful mixture of local attractions and ammenties.

Bishops Lydeard

The thriving village of Bishops Lydeard is located 6 miles north west of Taunton and is nestled at the foot of the Quantock Hills, an AONB. A short drive from the village takes you up to Cothelstone from where the Quantocks can be explored and the breathtaking views admired. And just along from Cothelstone is Fyne Court, a National Trust nature reserve and visitor centre which the Trust itself calls a 'hidden gem'.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is located in the heart of the village and is built of red sandstone, with a tall, typically Somerset tower embellished with facings of creamy Ham Hill stone. With sections dating from the end of the thirteenth century, the church is notable in particular for its interior furnishings which feature a medieval rood screen, a Jacobean pulpit and diverse pew carvings.

Visitors to the village can also explore the Bishops Lydeard Mill, a working mill with a restored watermill, and experience the thrills of West Somerset Railway's steam locomotives at the Bishops Lydeard terminus. The village is also home to the CAMRA-accredited microbrewery Quantock Brewery and Cedar Falls Health Farm & Spa, set in forty-four acres of secluded woodland.
