Somerset County Orchestra Concert

St James Church, St James, Taunton, TA1 1JS

9 Mar 2024

Description

Somerset County Orchestra's spring concert featuring works by Beethoven, Finzi and Brahms.

Somerset County Orchestra Concert

Because of the high standards he set for himself, Ludwig van Beethoven ended up writing four overtures for his only opera, Fidelio. The SCO played the fourth of these at our concert in October 2023. In this concert you will have the opportunity to listen to Leonore Overture No 3 which is one of the most popular of all overtures and stands up as a concert piece of its own.

Gerald Finzi is a 20th Century English composer who has, sadly, suffered some neglect, so do not miss this rare opportunity to hear his beautiful Violin Concerto; a gem which thoroughly deserves a new lease of life.

Johannes Brahms came to the conclusion that, after the death of Beethoven, symphony as a genre of music was becoming mediocre and new works needed to display greater creativity. Many commentators have suggested that his Symphony No 4 is the work that he always wanted to write – a synthesis of heart and mind with an elegance of melody and innovative harmonic structures. Here is an opportunity for you to judge for yourself at this concert.
