New partnership with Visit Somerset will boost help to South Somerset tourism
Release: Immediate
Date: 27 June 2019

A three year partnership arrangement will see the two partners working closely together to increase promotion and potentially reach national and international visitors to the area that will help put South Somerset’s unique identity firmly on the visitors map.

Visit Somerset has a brand new website, www.visitsomerset.co.uk, which is superbly placed to display our area at its best; with high quality imagery, film and cutting edge accessibility and content. There will be new South Somerset content coming later this year contributed by the Tourism team at SSDC.

Joint working with Visit Somerset will allow the dedicated Tourism team at SSDC to focus on the things that make South Somerset special. There are some great projects coming forward later in 2019, including:

  • Looking at a refurbishment of the River Parrett Trail with colleagues at Somerset County Council
  • Developing themed leaflets, particularly around our unique selling points of cider, and local food
  • Identifying and pulling together great activities and experiences in the beautiful countryside to keep visitors with us for longer
  • Leading on a new County wide Gardens brochure for national distribution
  • Ensuring there is high quality, local stock at our busy Tourist Information Centre at Cartgate Picnic site on the A303, which from July will sell the new Visit Somerset chocolate, made in Keynsham.

The South Somerset Tourism team with continue to organise networking events and the annual leaflet exchange. Our professional team will as usual operate from the Tourist Information Centres at Cartgate and Petters Way (Yeovil) to help handle enquires and support visitors in exploring our incredible area. Over the summer the South Somerset team we will be working with Visit Somerset on the 2020 tourism brochures, instead of duplicating effort which resulted in competing brochures.  South Somerset will this year have excellent coverage in the county wide publication, emphasising the unique, high quality Somerset experience.

John Turner, Visit Somerset CEO, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with South Somerset District Council, promoting an incredibly important region of the county. It’s an very  exciting time for both SSDC and Visit Somerset as we create this alliance which we know will have far reaching and positive applications for South Somerset & associated business”.

Councillor John Clark, portfolio holder for Economic Development at South Somerset District Council, added: “We are blessed in South Somerset with superb countryside, truly international attractions and unique food and drink. By working with Visit Somerset, our team at South Somerset will ensure our area is marketed to its full potential, creating a prosperous tourism industry for South Somerset and beyond.”
