Activities in Somerset

Somerset with its rural nature and wide open spaces is just waiting to be explored and enjoyed.

There are hosts of activities for the experienced and the novice alike whether it is long distance walking, mountain biking, wildlife watching or water based pursuits.

There are companies that organise activities such as pony trekking, rock climbing, ballooning and sailing.

There are also venues that specialise in one or more of such sports and hobbies.

The County has an impressive list of golf courses, several types of angling on offer and plenty of workshops where you can be creative with arts and crafts, particularly those with a rural pedigree such as making baskets or cider.

Being Somerset, there is room for the even more quirky so there are places where you can learn to make a sword or a willow coffin.

If wildlife is your passion you have come the right place!

In Somerset and on Exmoor National Park, you can follow red stags, listen out for booming bitters, catch a starling murmuration, spot an otter or spend a day learning how to fly a bird of prey.

The land of the greatest illuminated carnival in Europe, and home of the best known rock festival, has activities throughout the year that celebrate all that’s best in the area and these are just as welcoming of visitors as locals.

There are the traditional types such as wassailing, agricultural shows and game fairs and then there are the up and coming festivals of food and drink and the open art studios.

We have extreme sports and gentle pursuits, ancient disciplines like archery and modern ideas such as coasteering.

There are adrenalin fuelled high rope walks and thought provoking star-gazing trips.

We have well-trodden paths for ramblers and we have wildernesses for intrepid explorers.

There are food and animal safaris to join and there are trails to follow in the footsteps of poets; long sandy beaches to enjoy and endless country walks in one of the most dog friendly places in the UK.
