Somerset Attractions

Be they natural – like our long sandy beaches – or manmade – like our magnificent country homes, there are attractions aplenty in Somerset to suit all ages and interests.

As well as the coast and countryside, we have caves and canals; offering plenty of opportunities for adventure or quiet contemplation.

The beauty of the natural Somerset and Exmoor attractions, such as our bird reserves, is that they have something to see whatever the season, whether it is the visiting waders in winter or breeding bitterns in the spring.

The same is true for those attractions indoors be they museums, galleries or play areas.

Most Somerset attractions are designed to amuse and thrill the whole family and include three seaside piers, several aquaria, a number of zoos, a clutch of steam railways and plenty of fun parks.

There are exhibitions for the car crazy, plane mad and boat fanatics.

If it is culture you are after, there are abbeys, artists’ homes and castles.

England is famous for its gardens and Somerset is particularly well represented with some of the finest in the Country open to visitors.

Wells Cathedral, featured in BBC’s Drama ‘Wolf Hall’, is among the most popular of Somerset attractions with its breathtaking scissor arches.

It is up there with Glastonbury Tor as a major draw for visitors, the Tor having a magic and mystery all of its own.

If you are in the area you could also take in the Abbey with its association with the early Christianity and the Chalice Well.

The whole of Bath is a World Heritage Site so you cannot go far there without coming across an architectural gem but there are other places of interest such as the Thermal Spa and Roman Baths.

Somerset and Exmoor are blessed with a number of fascinating settlements whose roots can be traced back to Domesday and beyond.

As well as the ancient we have the modern with a brand new world class gallery and art centre run by Hauser & Wirth at Bruton.

Aside from the cultural, we have the natural with the awesome Cheddar Gorge and sumptuous Somerset Levels.
