Coleridge Cottage, National Trust

35 Lime Street, Nether Stowey, TA5 1NQ

Description

Historic home of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Somerset near Bridgwater
As in the poets’ day, there is still wilderness, heathland and a rocky shoreline where you can lose yourself in thought. The mix of heath on the top is a characteristic of the Quantocks and includes heather, whortleberry, gorse, bracken and wavy-haired grass. There is woodland too, once prized as a source of timber for ship building and now by walkers for its tranquillity. The oaks here are Sessile with acorns that grow directly on the branch and twisted trunks.

Coleridge Cottage, National Trust

Nestled in the quaint village of Nether Stowey, Somerset, Coleridge Cottage is the historic home of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It was here that Coleridge composed some of his most celebrated works, including "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Frost at Midnight," and "This Lime Tree Bower, My Prison." The cottage was a gathering place for literary greats, with frequent visits from William Wordsworth- it was here that the seeds of the Romantic movement were sown.

Coleridge's time at the cottage was marked by both creative brilliance and personal turmoil. His family life gradually disintegrated, exacerbated by a growing addiction to laudanum. Despite these struggles, the three extraordinary years he spent in Nether Stowey produced poems that continue to inspire across generations.

Acquired by the National Trust in 1909 and restored in 2011, Coleridge Cottage offers plenty to engage visitors of all ages. Indulge in the Tearoom’s delightful offerings, from cakes to cream teas. The Poet’s Lunch, featuring a Cheese Scone, Cheddar Cheese, Onion Marmalade, and a hot drink, is truly a feast for the senses!

Wander through the wildflower garden and find the Lime-Tree Bower—a perfect spot for quiet reflection or listening to audio posts that bring Coleridge’s verses to life. Try your hand at “Quill Writing,” or step back in time with our fancy dress box and “Dress like a Georgian.”

Young visitors will enjoy the indoor “Mouse Trail,” a fun adventure discovering hidden mice throughout the cottage.

Coleridge Cottage also hosts exclusive events, including poetry readings, guided nature walks, themed talks, and workshops. Stay updated by visiting our website for details.

Please note the cottage is unsuitable for wheelchairs due to small rooms and narrow corridors.
