Taste Somerset’s world-famous fine cheeses Somerset is as famous for its cheese as it is for its cider. Originating in the Somerset town of the same name, cheddar cheese has been proclaimed Britain's favourite and is hard to miss on any cheese board around the world. Somerset’s award-winning cheeses don’t stop there: there are plenty of varieties and styles still being made across the county. The go-to destination for full-flavoured cheeses Somerset is home to the world-famous rich and sharp cheddar cheese. This traditional cheese originated in Somerset centuries ago due to the county’s rich pastures and creamy milk the dairy herds produced. Cheese making is a combination of science and art and Somerset boasts a wealth of large-scale and artisan cheesemakers, each crafting produce with its own distinct style and flavours. Unsurprisingly, Somerset’s award-winning regional cheesemakers produce some of the best cheddar in the world. However, it’s not the only Somerset delicacy worth accompanying your biscuits: the county is home to a wide selection of hard and soft cheeses including ricotta, buffalo blue, brie and goats cheese, all lovingly crafted right here in Somerset. Discover and taste Somerset’s nectar, cider Famous for cider making for hundreds of years, Somerset is one of the biggest cider counties in the UK. From small scale orchards making farmhouse scrumpy cider, to large commercial operations producing a smooth refined drink, Somerset and cider are synonymous. Explore acres of Somerset orchards and all they have to offer With around 156 varieties of apple having a connection with Somerset, it’s clear why Somerset is so famous for its cider produce - not to mention its reputation for love of the sparkly apple-based alcohol. Somerset brands are well-known for using the traditional method of cider making by using sharper types of apples. Today, this authentic beverage can be found across the county, produced using a variety of methods, apples and flavours. Somerset’s vast orchards aren’t just for cider making: apple brandy, liqueurs, cider vinegars and refreshing apple juices are also made here. Many of the stunning orchards are attractions in their own right and bring different delights with each season, so take time to explore and learn about Somerset’s cider making heritage on your trip - making sure you taste the finished product before you go.
