Reflections – A Fresh Look

Returning from his latest trip to New York and Cuba, Sokal reflects on 25 years of exhibiting his watercolours at the Malthouse Gallery, East Lambrook Manor Gardens, and all the exotic locations he has visited and painted during that time. He felt inspired to look back at some of these places and to paint them in his current fresh style. The result is his landmark exhibition 'Reflections – A Fresh Look’, which opens on Tuesday 4th June.

This anniversary exhibition features new work from both his travels around the globe and, nearer home, Somerset and the West Country. Sokal has travelled all his life, growing up in Haifa and then moving to Sydney and later to Norton-sub-Hamdon in Somerset, yet he still travels the world in search of inspiration. The last year has seen him looking up old friends in New York before travelling on to Cuba, and both Manhattan and Havana have inspired his latest paintings. On a recent trip to Crete he was captivated by the rugged coastline and the ancient town of Hania with its narrow streets lined with Venetian and Turkish architecture.

The exhibition in the Malthouse Gallery, set in beautiful Grade 1 listed East Lambrook Manor Gardens, created by the Grande Dame of cottage gardening Margery Fish, runs until Sunday 21st July and is open Tuesday to Sunday. Entry to the exhibition is free, as is the café and nursey. The cottage garden, which is sublime in June and July, is also not to be missed.
