Downside Abbey is a Roman Catholic monastery, and is home to a community of Benedictine monks. The Abbey Church is a Minor Basilica and is dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great; it was described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as "the most splendid demonstration of the renaissance of Roman Catholicism in England". Downside School is a leading Catholic Independent Boarding School and is one of England's oldest and most distinguished schools.
