Description

For a great family day out, visit us to discover one of the largest collections of working steam engines and pumps in England, at the home of Somerset’s first Steam Powered Pumping Station, established in 1830.

Our friendly, knowledgeable volunteers will make your day with us a great success.

Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum

The use of steam power on the Somerset Levels, to control drainage of the low-lying moorlands, commenced at Westonzoyland in about 1830 when the first of eight pumping stations was built on the east bank of the River Parrett.

The original pump was replaced in 1861 by the unique ‘Award Winning’ Easton Amos land drainage machine. This is preserved in working order in its original engine house and demonstrated on steam days, being capable of pumping 100 tons of flood water per minute, the equivalent of emptying 7 bath tubs a second.

The original buildings are Grade II* listed.  These, together with our modern exhibition hall, engine shed and pump room, house one of the largest growing collections of working stationary steam engines, pumps, winches and turbines in England.  Steam is raised from a 1938 Marshall Portable Boiler, which has been fully restored.

Many of our engines have been manufactured locally or have connections to Somerset’s industrial heritage. They have driven brickworks and breweries, powered hospitals, hauled milk tankers and pumped creosote, to name just a few of their uses.

Ride behind an industrial locomotive on our 2’ narrow gauge railway, which is used for passengers and giving demonstrations.
