Muchelney Abbey

Muchelney, TA10 0DQ, Langport

Description

Muchelney Abbey was once the second largest abbey in Somerset

Muchelney Abbey
Surrounded by picturesque farmland and countryside, Muchelney Abbey was once the second largest abbey in Somerset. Discover what life was like in the abbey, wander through peaceful grounds and explore its remarkably intact medieval buildings.

Once a wealthy Benedictine house, Muchelney Abbey abruptly closed in 1538 during King Henry VIII’s famous dissolution of the monasteries. Yet there is still much to discover at this historic gem, set in an idyllic spot overlooking the Somerset Levels.

Today you can still see the clearly laid out foundations of the abbey, parts of the richly decorated cloister walk and thatched monks’ lavatory – the only one of its kind in Britain. The 16th-century abbots’ house remains intact with its magnificent rooms, and site finds are on display illustrating monastic life.

With plenty of rooms to explore, take a peaceful stroll into the past. On sunny days, children can let off steam and play in the grounds.
