urnham-on-Sea originated as a fashionable Victorian holiday resort and is the location of the southern tip of the second longest beach in Europe. The town offers a bustling high street with many independent shops and businesses, a theatre & arts centre, restored art-deco cinema, public gardens and busy calendar of free to attend events to ensure there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this thriving seaside town. Burnham is ideally placed for those who enjoy walking. It has beautiful and accessible countryside and coastal path walks on its doorstep. The town boasts activity trails to explore and a mile-long esplanade overlooking the west facing bay. Stop off at the Burnham visitor information centre on the esplanade to find out more. The iconic low lighthouse is the remaining active lighthouse of three Burnham lighthouses and is a must-see for visitors and photographers. Whilst Burnham may have one of the longest expanses of sand, it has the shortest pier in Britain, perfect for those looking for quaint, old fashioned fun. To see Burnham from above, climb nearby Brean Down headland for incredible 360-degree panoramic views of the Somerset Levels whilst reimagining history at The Palmerston Fort. A stroll along the town’s mile-long esplanade takes you past the 14th century leaning tower of St. Andrew’s Church, next to which are the enclosed Marine Cove Gardens, built in 1927 and restored in 2011 thanks to a Heritage Lottery Grant. The small public gardens are maintained by volunteers and offer sheltered seating overlooking a cherub fountain and lion head pool. From Spring 2021, a new and impressive inclusive children’s play area, with exercise equipment, will open on the town’s south esplanade, near the Burnham visitor information centre. Follow the seafront esplanade further south to join a footpath to the Green Flag award-winning Apex Leisure & Wildlife Park, which boasts 42-acres of open spaces in which to play, fish and enjoy a picnic. The park’s gentle lakeside walking routes host an abundance of wildlife, children's play area, outdoor gym and skate park. Set aside an afternoon to make the most of this tranquil spot. Take in a play or peruse some art over coffee and cake at The Princess Theatre & Arts Centre, which has a busy schedule of shows and events.
