At the mention of Hestercombe many people’s first though will be “garden”, but there’s so much more than just that. Yes, the gardens are glorious, landscaped and designed, as many gardening buffs will know, by Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll making them worthy of historical note, they are a mixture of striking formal gardens and more naturalistic areas of ponds and cascades where nature and wildlife flourish. The Head Gardener and her team, made up of a number of volunteers, do a wonderful job maintaining a garden of national importance which we are proud to have on our doorstep.
Hestercombe is ever-popular with families and the holiday activities are great for children to enjoy. Trails, workshops and events take place throughout the year and they are both educational and fun.
For a bite to eat:
After an invigorating walk and taking in the sweeping views who wouldn’t want to dive into the Stables Café for a delicious coffee and slice of homemade cake or light lunch? With tables well-spaced out, it is accessible to wheelchair users and welcoming to four-legged visitors.
There is also a gift shop stocking a wide range of products, many particularly suited to gardeners, while, in the Plant Centre, you will find the perfect memento of your visit with many of the plants on sale having been grown at Hestercombe.
The Second-hand Bookshop, with its fabulous views over the gardens, is a real gem for book-lovers to lose track of time browsing.
For art lovers:
Art plays a prominent part at Hestercombe with a strong focus on contemporary art, the gallery hosts wide-ranging and thought-provoking exhibitions and provides a focal point for local artists.
