Secret Seawalks

The England Coast Path in Somerset

Opened in 2016, the Somerset stretch of the England Coast Path offers stunning views, world class geology and wonderful wildlife. When complete, the Path will be the longest coastal walking route in the world at over 2600 miles and the 58 mile section between Minehead and Brean Down is surely one of the most diverse.

With the second highest tidal range in the world, views along the Bristol Channel change dramatically depending on the state of the tide - from waves lapping the rocky shore to vast expanses of limestone pavement and mudflats. At some points 4,000 year-old submerged forests and a ship wreck can be found. As an Estuary, it attracts many thousands of wintering birds from as far away as the Arctic and acts as a nursery for numerous fish species.

Among the many highlights of this trail are a castle on a hill, a steam railway, a 1000 year old port, a waterfall onto a beach, rare rock and reef formations, a new wetland reserve, the UK’s shortest pier, a lighthouse on legs and a Palmerston Fort.

The trail can be undertaken by long-distance walkers in two or three days and also makes a good week away with excursions around some of the landmarks and points of interest. It can be walked as a whole or in snippets and there are plenty of circular walks available at various places. The path is well sign posted.
