19 May 2020 - The Newt in Somerset, the working country estate near Bruton, has released a new addition to its artisan cyder range: Fine Rosé Cyder made with 100% apple juice, the first of its kind in the UK. Fuelled by a passion to innovate while showcasing Somerset heritage, the expert cyder team at The Newt is finessing the perceptions of cyder as a drink to be appreciated in the same way as wine.
Cellar Master, Greg Carnell and his team of Cyder Makers, Paul Ross and Dominic Gover, are pioneering the art of West Country cyder production, fusing their creativity and know-how to create a truly unique Fine Cyder range in their state-of-the-art cellar, using the same cold-fermentation processes as those used for wine. The new range, which includes Fine Rosé Cyder, along with a Fine Perry and Fine Cyder to be released later this year, have been produced and presented as wine, with suggested food pairings to match.
The exclusive Fine Rosé Cyder has been created using only apple juice, without added colouring, grapes or sweetener. With a lower alcohol percentage at 7.6% abv and reduced sugar content, its candy pink colour comes from the ‘Red Love’ apple variety created in Switzerland. These unique red-fleshed apples have been pressed, cold-fermented and bottled at The Newt by the small team of three.
In limited supply with only 2,400 bottles of 2019 Vintage, the cyder has a fresh summer feel – with notes of strawberries on the nose, hints of summer fruit and natural acidity, which is carefully offset with gentle sweetness. Pair with creamy goats’ cheese, mozzarella, salads and antipasti. RRP £11.95 / 750ml.

Cyder Making at The Newt in Somerset

The Newt celebrates every aspect of the county’s signature crop: the humble apple. From an apple tree maze at the core of the gardens, containing every apple variety grown in England, to 65 acres of legacy orchards containing 3,000 trees of 70 varieties of cider apple.
Rekindling the Golden Age of Cyder Making in the mid-18th Century, The Newt’s cyders are inspired by the gentry of this time, who drank their cyder from champagne flutes. Made in the same methods and held to the same standards as wine, they contain only 100% apple juice, with no added sugar or water. With traditional West Country roots, its Single Variety Cyders are the foundation of this, celebrating the attributes of apple varieties in the same way as grapes.
The history and heritage of Somerset cyder making is brought to life for visitors and guests, from private tours of the orchards - planted in standard style to recreate Georgian vistas – to daily tours of the state-of-the-art Cyder Press & Cellar. Advanced cold storage conditions allow the team to preserve and press apples in public displays throughout the year, while menus in the restaurants feature cyder lists beside wine lists.

Delivery and Mobile Newt service

Alongside The Newt’s signature cyders and pure apple juice, the Fine Rosé Cyder is available to purchase through The Newt’s online shop and new Mobile Newt delivery service. Launched in April in response to the government lockdown, The Newt refocused its business to support the local community with fresh food deliveries, providing nutritious produce from its gardens, kitchens, Bakery, Butchery and Creamery, along with local growers and artisan producers. The Mobile Newt offers free next day delivery to Bath and all BA postcodes, including the towns of Frome, Mells, Midsomer Norton, Warminster, Mere, Shaftesbury, Sherborne and Glastonbury. The team take all necessary hygiene and social distancing precautions, with contactless delivery as standard. Minimum order £35. Order by 3pm for next day delivery.
National and international visitors from further afield can purchase goods for their kitchens, homes and gardens from The Newt’s online shop. The online edit showcases a range of delicious pantry items including preserves, cyder, wine, olive oil and tea, produced onsite at The Newt in Somerset or at its sister property, Babylonstoren, in South Africa.
