Official Covid Statement from Visit Somerset on the behaviors of some online booking agents

18 May 2020

Tourism is nothing without the communities that sustain and develop it. Those valuable and long-standing communities shape the ethical set of values that deliver renowned hospitality in Somerset and Exmoor.
It is Visit Exmoor and Visit Somerset responsibility to represent and promote this in a way that is respectful to those that are fortunate enough to live here and ensures the safety of those who visit.

The Covid crisis has been exceptionally testing for our communities and our tourism sites and businesses.
The overwhelming majority have acted with great responsibility, as have many of those who would usually visit the area and National Park.

We have found throughout this that individuals want to do the right thing, either as requested by government or in line with social behaviour and expectations.

Over the past week, concerns have been raised with us that some online booking agents and websites are taking bookings for June, which is counter to Government guidelines.  The concerns raised are that this is disrespectful to our communities and is not supporting visitors in making responsible choices.

Visit Somerset and Visit Exmoor will continue to advise our members and tourism businesses to follow government guidelines which is that the earliest date accommodation can be booked is early in July (if the Governments criteria regarding the transmission levels of Corna-Virus are met).   This potential timeline also gives our tourism and hospitality businesses time to understand and implement what is required to open safely, stay alert and continue to protect our communities and the NHS. Thank you Visit Somerset Team
