Blasts from the past can raise funds for the future

Sports clubs in Weston-super-Mare are being given a chance to raise vital funds by teaming up with the town’s Grand Pier for three special events later this year.
The seafront attraction is winding back the clock to offer music lovers a chance to don their glad (or glam) rags, enjoy their favourite blasts from the past and give their clubs a helping hand, too.
Lorna Withington, Event Co-ordinator at the Grand Pier, explained: “Every year, we receive numerous requests to provide support for local sports clubs.
“For the past two years, we have organised an annual fund-raising concert, including an 80s-themed event in 2017 and a 90s-themed event last year, which sold more than 400 tickets.
“Due to the popularity of these events, this year we will be hosting a series of three concerts; one for the 70s, one for the 80s and one for the 90s.
“The idea is simple. The sports clubs themselves sell tickets to any one of the three events (or all three, if they want to raise even more money), and they will retain 50% of the proceeds from the ticket sales to boost their own club funds.
“All we ask is that each club that wants to take part sells a minimum of 50 tickets.

“We will provide the actual tickets, promotional materials (in print and electronic formats), and list clubs taking part on our website and social media channels.
“The rest is up to you. Get those posters up in your club houses, sell tickets to club members, family members and fans, target players during training sessions or while having a drink afterwards!
“It’s a great way to have a fun night out and raise money.”
The Grand Pier Rewinds To The 70s on Saturday 7 September, Rewinds To The 80s on Saturday 12 October and Rewinds To The 90s on Saturday 16 November.
All the concerts feature a live band plus a DJ, playing top tunes from the ten years that each event covers. Those who attend are encouraged to dress for the decade, too.
For the 70s night, the live performance comes courtesy of The Boogie Factor, a talented trio who offer great vocals, high-energy dance routines, and sensational 70s costumes, who will lead the audience through many well-known sing-along disco anthems.
In October, the Grand Pier Rewinds To The 80s in the company of The 80s Club, a quartet committed to delivering a truly authentic 80s tribute show, with chart-topping tracks from the likes of Bon Jovi, Guns’n’Roses, Journey, Phil Collins, Wham and many more.
For November’s 90s night, a fantastic new girl band, The 90s Project, will perform outstanding vocals, close three-part harmonies and choreographed, high-energy, dance routines to many of the decade’s top tracks.
Lorna said: “Tickets for each concert are just £10 each, so this is a fantastic opportunity for local clubs to generate money towards new kit, new facilities or anything else they need.
“The combination of live performances, fantastic music, the chance to dress for the occasion, enjoy a great value night out, and help sports clubs raise much needed funds means that everyone’s a winner.”
Last year’s 90s-themed event saw five sports clubs raise more than £700 between them – simply by selling tickets for a night of live music and dance.
Weston Rugby Club raised an impressive £290 from their ticket sales. Director of Rugby Mark Philp said: “The cash-back on ticket sales is a great initiative and allowed us to raise some much-needed funds.
“We had a great night at the very well-organised function, and hope to take part in future events like this, where I am sure we will sell even more tickets.”
Any local sports clubs interested in finding out more or signing up so that they can start selling tickets and raising funds, should contact the events team on the Grand Pier, by calling 01934 646 155 or email
