Guided Walking Tour of Dunster village

12 Jul 2021

Walkers of all ages, history enthusiasts and families can now book a new guided walking tour of Dunster with Exmoor Village Walks. The guided walks take place every Tuesday from at 10.30am and 2pm, and until the end of the year.

Tour guide Jackie Barnes knows this beautiful and ancient village inside out. She leads the 1.5-to-2-hour tour which is not only fascinating but entertaining too. Jackie shares her wealth of history knowledge with walkers, peppering it with anecdotes and stories about the residents of the village past and more recent. This really brings the story of the village through the centuries to life and walkers will discover interesting facts that they won’t get anywhere else!

The tour starts at the Dunster Steep, and loops around the outskirts of the village, taking in the working watermill, ancient packhorse ‘Gallox’ Bridge, St George’s Church, the Dovecote and then back to the iconic Yarn Market where the tour ends – and there are many more points of interest along the way! Bring your camera as there are some fabulous views of the Exmoor countryside and coastline that surround Dunster.

This is a gentle stroll, suitable for walkers of all ages and abilities. Jackie has a special ‘I Spy’ for younger walkers, and well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome. The tours go in all weathers, so please wear appropriate clothing, and be prepared for cobbles, mud, and some inclines. At the end of the walk there will be plenty of opportunities for relaxation, shopping, or a well-earned lunch or afternoon tea!

Tour guide Jackie Barnes says. “Dunster is a fascinating village, steeped in history, and I’m delighted to be able to share it on the walking tour this summer. I hope to bring the story of the village to life, explaining more about the different historical points of interest and their role in daily life. As well as history through the ages, I also share more recent stories and anecdotes from residents. It’s a fun morning or afternoon and because no two walks are ever the same, you never know what you’ll discover. Not only that, when you finish in the high street, you will be presented with the choice of browsing, eating or drinking in the great independent businesses in Dunster.”
