Somerset County Federation of WIs has filled Shoeboxes to donate to Charities in Somerset.

11 Dec 2020

For the last 8 years the Somerset County Federation of WIs has filled Shoeboxes to donate to Charities in Somerset. Last year we collected over 500 boxes from WIs throughout the County and Lydeard St. Lawrence WI coordinated and delivered over 300 to YMCAs in Taunton, Bridgwater and Wells. 80 of these boxes went to Sparkle Christmas Appeal and 120 to ARC – the Taunton based Homelessness Charity.

When we launched our Christmas Shoebox Appeal this year we were doubtful we could repeat the success of previous years, given current pandemic and the many challenges facing WI Members, some of whom are shielding, many of whom are elderly. We felt that this year the need for these boxes was greater than ever.

We haven’t been disappointed. The response from WI Members throughout Somerset has been overwhelming and to date, despite unprecedented challenges, we have collected almost 400 boxes.

Each Shoebox, once it has gone through a quarantine period, will be checked and labelled whether appropriate for a boy/male or girl/female and will be delivered in good time for Christmas. This year we had requests from YMCAs  in Somerset for 340 boxes and any surplus will go to the Village Agent Network, which will ensure that the boxes are received by those in need.

The thoughtfulness and generosity of those who have donated is truly moving. Many boxes include cards with good wishes, hand knitted items and other Christmas gifts and treats. We are well aware that for many, the only gift they will receive this Christmas will be due to the kindness of a complete stranger.
