Wells Art Contemporary

Description

For its 10th edition, Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) received over 3,700 submissions from 2,000 creatives hailing from 45 different countries. This year’s judges, Amanda Loomes, Jonathan Yeo, Simon Periton and Will Nash selected 91 artworks, which showcase the very best in contemporary art in the UK and across the world. There will also be 28 installations, which were designed specifically for the Cathedral and its grounds.

All of the shortlisted works are now displayed in the much-anticipated WAC exhibition, open in Wells Cathedral until Sunday 26 September. Brought to us by 87 artists, the shortlisted artworks are innovative and eclectic, spanning across all disciplines, media and subjects. They will be displayed inside and around Wells Cathedral, allowing the most contemporary work to enter in a dialogue with the 850-year-old architectural masterpiece.

The exhibition will coincide with the installation of a brand-new piece by world-famous sculptor Antony Gormley, best known for his Angel of the North. Cast in iron and just over life-size, the work will be unveiled on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.

“Wells will become a must-visit destination for visual art lovers with both the WAC shortlist on display and the new Gormley work installed on the Cathedral’s West Front” says Paddy O’Hagan, Chair of WAC. “Great visual art is about starting conversations, pushing boundaries and provoking debate - and that’s what this collaboration with this great Gothic Cathedral has the potential to do.”
