Hilliard Society of Miniaturists

Miniature paintings are often thought of as unflattering old portraits and indeed, the genre is a particularly English art form going back hundreds of years. The modern miniature, however, could not be further from its roots when it comes to subject matter. While the traditional portrait is still very much in evidence, the annual exhibition of The Hilliard Society of Miniaturists of over 250 miniatures shows the diversity of subjects, from animal and wildlife to landscape, still life and anything dreamed up in the imaginations.
The exhibition takes place in the main hall of the Town Hall in Wells, appropriately England’s smallest city. Exquisite detail can be found within a few inches, seldom larger than 3”x4”. The exhibition is a rare opportunity to see work by some of the leading miniaturists in the country, and prices for these stunning pieces are a fraction of their larger counterparts. As one collector said, ‘collecting miniatures is addictive; you can have so many more on the wall than just one large painting and I never tire of looking at the variety’.
This really is an exhibition not to be missed, so come and enjoy a day out in Wells.
