Paulton is a large village with approximately 2,620 homes, located to the north of the Mendip Hills and is one of the largest in Bath & North East Somerset.  Paulton is a former coal-mining village and the name Paulton is thought to have derived from the word ‘peall’ meaning village on the hillside.

There are many groups and clubs active in the village, including sport, socialising, educational subjects and spiritual needs, providing many opportunities to get involved with the community.

Paulton is very lucky to have three recreation areas, with all the parks and open spaces beautifully maintained and offering a variety of facilities:

The Memorial Park is renowned in the local district for its play area and facilities, which include tennis and basketball courts for public use. These are checked and cleaned daily.  Tennis rackets and balls are available to borrow from the parish council office thanks to the kind donation of the playing equipment from Camvale Tennis Club.  The outdoor gym is free to be used at any time by anyone over the age of 14 years and can be found adjacent to the children’s play area.  The children’s’ play equipment accommodates children from the very young to teenagers and it has been known that a few adults have been seen enjoying a swing! There is seating in the play area enabling adults to sit and watch their children or be ready to help them on the various pieces of equipment.

Each summer the Memorial Park is the venue for Party in The Park, a free event for all, which features various stalls, attractions, food, drink, bands and displays, such as Karate. The Junior school puts on a fabulous dance display.

The Miners’ Welfare Recreation Ground is home to local junior football teams who play at weekends during the season; Paulton Bowls Club have a very nice club house and green and the Scout and Guide movement have their headquarters in a multi-use building which enables them to hire it out to various other groups in the village.

The Wallenge Open Space is another area with an assortment of children’s’ play equipment, although not as much as can be found in the Memorial Park.

There are beautiful walks in and around the village and some are of historical interest, with Paulton Basin just north of the village being one. It had a dry dock for the barges that used to carry coal from the pits and was the terminus of the Somerset Coal Canal.

In the same area you will find Paulton Engine, which was a foundry, now recently renovated into a family home and studio.

Paulton was home to the now sadly closed Polestar/Purnell printing factory, along with Ashman’s boot factory where ‘Voidax’ safety footwear was manufactured and, in particular, motorcycle speedway boots.

The village has some fantastic amenities, including a small Hospital with Maternity unit and Minor Accident department, a Doctor’s surgery, various Nurseries, Paulton Infant and Junior Schools, a Swimming Pool, Library, Café, Shops, Supermarket, Vet, Dentists, Restaurant, Takeaways, Pubs, Fire and Ambulance stations.

The Parish Council has a website www.paultonparishcouncil.org.uk and a Facebook page, along with two noticeboards – one at the village hall and the other in Hill Court shopping precinct. These various forms of communication provide useful sources of information for our residents, including details of all council business.

Each year, residents show their respect at a service at Double Hills to remember the pilots and soldiers who were killed when their glider crashed many years ago en route to Arnhem. A service of Remembrance also takes place at the War Memorial and is attended by many residents, some who are related to those killed in the two world wars.

Christmas sees the Christmas Market & Lights Switch On which is organised by Paulton Parish Council and is an extremely popular event.
