CHEW STOKE has a population of around a 1000 and lies at the foot of the Mendip Hills – designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village sits at the northern end of Chew Valley Lake, 9 miles south of Bristol, 11 miles north of wells and 12 miles west of Bath.

Listed in the Domesday Book as Chiwestoche the suggestion is it may have had some military connection at the time – the name “Stoke” comes from the old English stoc meaning a stockade.  This lengthy history is reflected in the number of heritage listed buildings throughout the Chew Valley.

The long established Stoke Inn and the welcoming restaurant the Chew Kitchen sit close to the village centre. There are two lakeside restaurants, The Salt and Malt (specialising in fish and chips) and Woodford Lodge.  The community includes a primary school, a medical centre and GP’s surgery, the multi-use Church Hall, and boasts a number of flourishing clubs and societies.

Bed and breakfast accommodation is catered for by Orchard House and the Stoke Inn.

The buildings at Fairseat Farm, once a working dairy, have been converted to office and workshop use – spaces which include a hairdressing salon, a joinery, an artist’s studio, an osteopath practice, a flower design shop, and a TV and video business.

A century old national cycling route – the Bristol to Padstow West Country Way – is still popular with cyclists and runs through the village

The village’s substantial claim to history, is its double century association with the BILBIE FAMILY – clock makers and bell founders, who lived and worked in Chew Stoke from the late 17th to late 19th century. The family cast 1350 bells for churches all over the west country and the south west. The oldest surviving bell, cast in 1698, is still working in the village church of St Andrew.

CHEW STOKE CHURCH HALL is situated on the corner of Church Lane.

It is used for church events, and by a number of village organisations – including the Parish Council, the WI, Chew Stoke Film Club, the Dramatic Society, Scissors Exercise Class, the Hall Singers and Chew Valley Choral Society.

Insured and licensed for 100 people, the hall is available for hire by individuals, clubs and societies; and is an ideal venue for public meetings, private events, suppers, parties and wedding receptions.  Every month it plays host to the Majestic, the village Neighbourhood Cinema, supported by the British Film Institute and the National Lottery.
