Westonzoyland

Description

A visit to this charming Levels village would not be complete without calling into the magnificent 13th century Grade 1 Listed St Mary’s Church to learn more about the last conflict on English soil – the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685 - when the army of King James II defeated rebels led by the Duke of Monmouth.

The battle of Sedgemoor is not the only conflict remembered in Westonzoyland church which has a corner honouring local airmen from both World Wars. The village had an RAF airfield for more than 40 years which now serves as a base for a microlight club.

The church clock was originally faceless but its bell struck the hour which was the only way most residents knew the time before clocks and watches were commonplace.  It also has a chime, silent these days, created by a mechanism similar to a cider press.

For almost 100 years the same family has been growing willow on the Levels at Westonzoyland and is happy to welcome visitors to Musgrove Willows.
