The quintessential English village, with wide streets and glowing hamstone buildings, many of which are thatched which welcomes visitors to its many attactions.
Hinton St. George is a small community of some 220 houses which manages to retain all the important features of a traditional English village - a school, a village shop, a teashop, a pub, a village hall and a grade-1 listed church. Hinton St. George C of E First School is highly rated by Ofsted and valued by the local community which has given it significant financial support in recent years. The Village Shop and Post Office were bought by the community in 2011 and since then has flourished, stocking a wide range of local produce in additon to basic daily needs as well as products which will be attractive to visitors such as local maps, teatowels and Somerset cider and cider-based drinks. Dorothy's Tearoom is a much-loved institution which has been running for almost 20 years and in 2017 was voted the Best Teashop in England in the competition organised by Clipper Teas. Try its full afternoon tea! The Lord Poulett Arms which nestles under its thatched roof in the centre of the village was Gastro Pub of the Year in 2015 but still maintains the feel of a 'local'. It has a bar and dining room furnished with antiques, several well-appointed bedrooms and an attractive garden complete with boules court, the scene of the annual village boules competition. The Village Hall with its extensive playing fields and children's playground provides an important location for many village events and during the summer weekends, visitors will find tradional village cricket being played. St. George's Church is a fine example of a Grade-1 listed country church and contains an unique collection of monuments to the Poulett family, who were Lords of the Manor of Hinton until the late 20th century. The monuments include the unique scagliola monument to the first Baron Poulett which was awarded the SPAB John Betjeman Award for Conservation in 2014. Come and visit us!
