70 High Street, BA4 5AS, Shepton Mallet
The maker of big business including fashion house Mulberry and cider maker Brothers, today Shepton offers luxury outlet shopping, internationally-recognised country shows and one of the oldest prisons in the UK, now open to the public.
Set in undulating hills between Wells and Frome, Shepton Mallet dates back to Roman times: it was an important stop on the Fosse Way, a Roman road that traversed the south west. Since then, it’s played host to factories for world-famous brands, premium outlet shops, a redeveloping high street and the UK’s oldest prison.
For many years the town was the centre of production for a number of leading UK brands, all locally founded, including fashion house Mulberry, cider makers Thatchers and Brothers, and sparkling wine Babysham. What’s more, Dairy giants Wyke Farms and confectionary marque James Chocolates are based in villages just down the road.
The former Mulberry factory is now a swish outlet village, selling premium brands at discounted prices. Wander around the beautifully-updated site and stop for lunch in the courtyard restaurant, then while away the hours in the walled gardens under the Charlton Viaduct next door. Kept secret from the public for many years and finally opened to all in 2008, the gardens are home to exotic trees and flowers, waterfalls, streams and dovecotes.
Shepton Mallet prison is Britain’s oldest, and it’s now a Grade-II listed site that’s reopened as a unique family attraction. Walk the halls and discover how incarcerated life has evolved over the 400 years since the prison’s first dungeon-like iteration. Outside in the town centre, walk the narrow streets to see the high prison walls, and stop at one of the ancient pubs loved by locals and visitors alike.
In keeping with the agricultural spirit of Somerset, the Shepton Mallet area plays host to the Royal Bath and West Show each year. Spread over the 240-acre showground site are exhibits, stalls, stores and shows that represent the best of British agriculture, entertainment, food and drink.
For a relaxed escape, spend the weekend at Shepton Mallet’s own Charlton House Hotel and Spa. Set amid stunning landscaped grounds, this perfectly-renovated former stately home includes a Bannatyne Health Club and restaurant crafting dishes inspired by - and using - locally-sourced produce.
Shepton Mallet is a small market town in the Mendip district of Somerset. The town lies on the route of the Fosse Way, the principal Roman road into the South West of England. There are 218 listed buildings in the town including the market cross that dates back to the 1500’s and a 10th century church. There are a number of fine houses in the older parts of the town around Lower Lane and Leg Square as well as the outlying suburbs such as Bowlish and Charlton. The newest addition to the town is the Rock Flock, the stone sheep on the Cannard’s Grave roundabout. Shepton Mallet retains a strong character as a small market town and place to live.
