Somerset Towns and Villages
A historic market town with two Roman villas discovered in the area, Keynsham boasts a range of independent shops, pubs and cafés, while the Keynsham Music Festival regularly attracts over 20,000 visitors.
Located handily just off the main road between Bristol and Bath, Keynsham’s convenient setting is complemented by its dramatic scenery and fascinating history. It became known as an important market town in medieval times, and now boasts perfect transport links to take visitors to Bristol, Bath and even London with ease.
Keynsham’s history dates back even further than the middle ages: it’s been occupied since prehistoric times and is thought to be the site of the Roman settlement of Trajectus. The rivers Avon and Chew meet in the town, and looking south you’ll spy a dramatic valley, overlooking which Keynsham is built on both sides. Walkers will love the paths that follow the valley into the Mendip Hills, where you’ll find plenty of pubs to stop at en route. In the middle of town lies Memorial Park, 26 acres of greenery that includes bowling green, outdoor sports areas, performance area and café.
Being so close to two major cities makes Keynsham a hive of activity: for many years it was home to the factories of chocolate-maker Cadbury, and now its high street combines on-trend favourites with small independent retailers. To eat and drink, try the town centre for modern bistros like Bonzo Lounge, or head to the other side of town for the riverside welcome of The Lock Keeper, with its pub garden and space for kids to run around.
Key family attractions in Keynsham include Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park, where little ones can spend days in the play barn and get up close with farm and domestic animals, while older kids try everything from drop slides and obstacle courses to mini golf and go carts.
