Two hundred years ago as many as seventeen stage coaches a day would pass through Wincanton.  

Today approach it from the north along what was once the main London road (the A303 bypasses the town) and it is easy to imagine very little has changed. 

The wide street still contains handsome houses and staging inns and the town’s name is still linked with horses 

Wincanton is officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork - the premier city state in author Terry Pratchett's fantasy Discworld novels - which is represented in the town with its own consulate!
