Job Title: Visitor Services Supervisors

Overview of the Organisation
Set in 52 acres of glorious Somerset countryside, high in the Blackdown Hills, Ferne Animal Sanctuary has been saving the lives of unwanted and abandoned animals for over 75 years. We provide refuge for domestic animals, farm animals and horses. We work hard to rehome the cats and dogs that find their way into our care, other animals remain at Ferne to enjoy the rest of their lives in the peace and tranquillity that the Sanctuary offers.
Main purpose of the role
The post holders will be responsible for the smooth running of our new Visitors Centre. You will be the first point of call for visitors to the Sanctuary which will include members of the public, trade and business. Maintaining strong inter departmental communication at all times is vital alongside excellent and professional customer service at all times.
Key Responsibilities
  • To provide consistently high standards of visitor care at all times when welcoming visitors to the Sanctuary; processing admissions, retail and membership sales
  • Relay accurate information about planned Sanctuary events
  • To enhance visitors Ferne experience through an excellent ‘meet and greet and by providing general information about the Sanctuary to optimise income generation
  • To respond to complaints; listen to feedback from our visitors and to ensure that it is used positively to develop the organisation and its activities
  • To provide the highest possible standard of presentation ensuring that all displays, fixtures, fittings and premises are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness
  • To be an advocate for the Sanctuarys aims by supporting staff and volunteers through effective team work and good levels of internal communication
  • To keep up to date with the history of the site and past/present/future developments to ensure consistently excellent Sanctuary knowledge
  • Ad-hoc administration tasks and any other duties as requested by the CEO.

Skills & Experience
Qualifications/Training
  • Good standard of education
  • Microsoft packages including Word, Excel & Outlook
  • Basic Till Work
Knowledge and Experience
  • Proven excellent customer service and experience working with the public
  • Previous retail experience would be advantageous including till work
  • A keen understanding and belief in the mission of Ferne Animal Sanctuary 
Personal Skills
  • An ability to build good relationships and enjoy dealing with members of the public effectively and professionally
  • Excellent administration duties with the ability to prioritise effectively
  • Ability to work under own initiative, managing own workload and working within a team
  • Professional telephone manner and effective communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Sound IT skills
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • To work closely and oversee the work of volunteers within the Visitors Centre and our new Retail Shop
Conditions of Employment
Hours: To cover 7 days per week, 9-5 daily with 1-hour unpaid lunchbreak. Job Share – ideally one person 4 days / one person 3 days, but happy to consider a 5 day and 2 day split. (this includes weekend and Bank Holiday working).

Your normal hours of work are 09.45am to 5.00pm (6 hours and 15 minutes) in summer and 4.00pm (5 hours and 15 minutes) in winter. You may need to work additional hours to manage the Conference room bookings.
 
Job Holders work on rota and can be expected to share weekend working, so flexibility is key.
Holidays: 28 days including bank holidays which increases by 1 day each year after 2 years of service, capped at 25 days (pro rata for PT employees).
Salary: £9.27 per hour
Please note the Sanctuary operates a Time Off in Lieu policy for all overtime worked.
