Holburne Museum

THE HEART OF THIS FASCINATING COLLECTION was formed by Sir Thomas William Holburne (1793–1874), who lived in Bath with his three unmarried sisters. Holburne had inherited some family treasures, to which he added 17th–18th- century silver and porcelain, Italian majolica and bronzes, old master paintings, portrait miniatures, books and furniture and a variety of other items. In 1882, the collection of over 4000 objects was bequeathed to the people of Bath by Holburne’s sister Mary Anne Barbara Holburne, forming the nucleus of a collection that today has grown to over 6500 works of art, including work by Gainsborough, Guardi, Stubbs, Ramsay and Zoffany.
