FOR A SPECTACULAR VIEW OF BATH, a visit to Prior Park is essential. Situated in a sweeping valley, the park features an architectural masterpiece, one of only four Palladian bridges in the world.
A park first appeared on the site around 1100, when deer were released. In
the 18th century Bath entrepreneur Ralph Allen extended and added to the park (with advice from two experts, poet Alexander Pope and landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown).
Their influence can be felt in this garden, particularly when standing beside the Palladian bridge on a cool autumnal morning, when mist fills the Avon valley below.
The walk up the hill towards the large Prior Park Estate building (not open to the public) provides a sweeping view of Bath and its Georgian splendour.
