Gallery to explore portraits' secrets

6th August 2015

Categories: News

Portraits and the clues left by artists as to their subjects' true character will be explored at Bath’s Victoria Gallery from August 20.
Portraits and Identity invites art lovers to take a closer look at a range of works, including a rather flattering depiction of Alexander Pope and caricatures of naturalist Joseph Banks and members of the Bath Corporation.
At the centre of the show will be Grayson Perry’s unusual self-portrait Map of Days, which was purchased by the gallery in 2014.
Depicted as a map, it features a river of imagination and a walled city that includes streets with names such as Intuition, Revenge and Churning Insecurity.
Councillor Patrick Anketell-Jones, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet member for economic development, said: “Bath residents and visitors will have an opportunity to see this wonderful array of portraits for free.  This exhibition gives a fascinating insight into portrait artists and their sitters.”
Portraits and Identity will run alongside the Jane Austen’s Bath exhibition.
