The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has one of the most renowned percussion sections in Europe. Its members, Adrian Spillett, Matthew Hardy and Toby Kearney, join students from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Wells Cathedral School. This unique evening of percussion virtuosity includes a rare chance to hear Steve Reich’s Six Marimbas and Ionisation, Edgard Varèse’s ground-breaking piece for 13 solo percussionists, described at its New York premiere in 1931 as “a sock in the jaw”
