Passing through beautiful countryside, the line skirts between the Quantock Hills in the east and the Brendon Hills and Exmoor National Park to the west.
The West Somerset Railway is a country branch line of the old Great Western Railway and is full of fascination.
The historic steam locomotives, coaches, wagons and buildings of its 10 unique stations linked by a 20 mile scenic journey will repay hours of exploration.
As you journey through unspoilt villages and farms, you soon reach the cliffs and coast of the Bristol Channel, all waiting to be discovered.
Fun for everyone While you’re there....
Minehead is a beautiful seaside resort on the North coast of Somerset. Simply cross the road at the station and you’ll find yourself on the beach. Follow the esplanade along to the town harbour and an array of shops.
Explore Dunster with its original yarn market and Medieval castle, the largest in England. Run by the National Trust and dating back to the Norman times, it is well worth a visit. Railway users can save 20% on entry by showing their ticket.
At Bishop’s Lydeard, hile changing between train and bus, take time to walk around this picturesque village. Visit the splendidly restored watermill or the village’s 14th Century church.
Booking Your Ticket
The West Somerset Railway operate various different timetables throughout the year.
GWR operate a regular service to Taunton from London, Cardiff, Bristol and the South West. Go to GWR.com for detailed timetable information.
Our day package is now valid on the 0730 departure from London Paddington (via Bristol Temple Meads), giving you the opportunity to enjoy a longer day out.
Buses between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard run every half an hour (Hourly on Sundays). The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. For bus times go to www.busesofsomerset.co.uk

Please note that these tickets are not valid for Santa Special days. This ticket can be bought for special events and Gala days but an additional payment may be required by the West Somerset Railway.
